BABS Directors’ College is a weekend residential college that runs from Friday evening through to Sunday afternoon.

This is the ninth Directors’ College and is a high quality educational event designed specifically for existing directors, assistant directors or anyone who may like to try directing. In addition, music team members are more than welcome so that they can understand the dynamics and role of the director. The split of delegates is usually 70% of directors with experience to 30% who are novices. BABS Directors’ College has a high Faculty to Delegate ratio (1:4) and a number of elements specific to choral directing are worked on over the weekend.
 
Course Subjects
The three key themes of the weekend include Directing Techniques, Leadership and Management, and How to teach What you Know. In addition you will learn about the Music Behind Barbershop, and assisting your singers vocal skills through Personal Vocal Instruction. There is also a special session where College experience excellent coaching from our guest educator as a chorus singing the college song. Learning materials are provided in advance.
On the final day we have three choirs in attendance. This is the part of the weekend that most delegates value, they are filmed for 10-15 minutes, being coached whilst directing one of the three choruses. They are then taken through the recording by their coach, to reinforce the learning points.
Visiting Educator - Rob Campbell
We are delighted that Rob Campbell will be joining us as this year's Guest Educator. Rob has many years experience with the Barbershop Harmony Society as an educator. He is the immediate past Music Category Specialist and a prolific barbershop arranger. He previously directed the West Towns Chorus from Lombard, ILL , and won two chorus silver medals as Associate Director of the New Tradition Chorus from Northbrook, ILL. Professionally, Rob is an educational consultant, making him ideally placed to help us improve our teaching skills as Directors.

Directors’ College is open to everyone interested in directing; members and non-members of BABS, men and women. You can be assured of a warm welcome to this prestigious educational event.
Grants Available
The British Association of Barbershop Singers is a registered charity, with the aim of promoting music education and the understanding of singing harmony in the barbershop style. The charity offers grants to help meet the need of individuals for the improvement and development purposes. Applications will be considered for help with course fees.
