Mike, as a Chemistry graduate, initially worked for a Chemical Company with travel opportunities in his role there.   After 8 years he decided, along with 3 long-time friends, to become self-employed for 11 years in a neighbourhood Convenience Store.    When this became unviable, due to the increased presence of the big supermarkets in that area, he moved, from Essex, back to the family home in Hemel Hempstead and into the Contract Catering world.    Starting as a Kitchen Porter in 1993 in a nearby contract for BP, has moved on to his current role as one of 3 Finance Managers on site for Aramark at the Northwood Tri-Service HQ, albeit now for only 3 days a week.

Thanks to Chas Owen making that all important follow up phone call in March 1993 he joined The Hemel Hempstead BHC, which is now Chess Valley Barbershop Singers (Knights of Harmony).    Since then he took the opportunity to travel again, starting with the Australian Convention in 1997.   This was followed by 5 International Conventions, an Alaska Barbershop Cruise in 2000, with an onboard mixed chorus of 300 under the direction of Jim Clancy, and a tour of China with a smaller mixed chorus and Ken Hatton directing.    With his own chorus he has been to Zakynthos and Ireland.

From early on he became a regular attender at the twice-yearly BABS Members Meetings, representing his club.   He was ‘head hunted’ by Richard May in 2010 to join the Convention Logistics Team and has been part of the Technical Team at both Prelims and Harmony College.   When the decision was made to create a separate role of Company Secretary, after Ash Baker stood down as the Director with that responsibility, the Board accepted his application.   This role not only includes all the usual legal aspects but also includes minute taking at Board and Members Meetings, which for many years had been fulfilled by Chas Owen.
